Just to be tedious, I also needed dpkg to get deb2lzm to work. I am finding Ark a bit difficult to work with - does it need more libraries?

Hmm borrow from 2008 perhaps....the deb handling stuff is a fair size...perhaps left out for that reason but another addon perhaps?

Thanks for reminding me about ark...it didn't seem to like some tar.gz I had either....i forgot to mention that one.
In 2008 I added Xarchive (from debian) so I can handle debs like any other archive...its only tiny..should work in 2010 to assuming dpkg is present.

crude for converting...I have not tried it yet lol

Code:
#!/bin/sh
FILE="`basename $1`"
NAME="${FILE%.*}"
cd "`dirname $1`"
mkdir "2010_$NAME"
unsquashfs2008 "$FILE" "2010_$NAME"
dir2lzm "2010_$NAME"

where unsquashfs is from 2008 and renamed.

Have not had much time on 2010 as I messed up flash mounting in some way on 2008...lol

regards

Mike

Just in case anyone is trying to get a scanner working I should have mentioned that I added usblp from a Slax module.

The File Manager was unhelpfully showing all partitions as "Volume (ext3)".

The solution to this is to run Gparted (probably from a Live CD is best) and to add labels to your partitions. They then show as hda1 etc;.

Hmmm 2008 had a sophisticated fonts configuration which meant gorgeous fonts in every application.
2010 has a basic /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and in firefox in particular the fonts are horrible (tweaking settings only partly helps and should not be needed).

This fonts.conf does improve it though serif fonts are not being shown as serif...hmm.
http://indogo.org/data/fonts.conf
Just a little thing but is in the top 10 list of things new linux users complain about.

Anyone able to connect to freenode on irc with kopete...the defaults seems to have a kde server and when connecting it crashes?

regards

Mike

ooo and anyone know how to enable cookies in firefox3.6?...
edit..custom privacy....disabled by default.

Ok swap partition is not being loaded at boot automatically...works manually...that explains my regular crashes before.

Xine hangs very easily when watching shoutcast streams.
edit...actualy dragon player too...seems anything involving video is crashing X resulting in a hard reset....my hunch is the xorg driver....I will try a preconfigured xorg.conf next.

In regards to what other DE should be looked at ,I'm in favor of LXDE

This is by way of a belated reply to BCMC's suggestion of an LXDE alternative desktop.

This is a good suggestion as the LXDE desktop provides a very quick boot time. Lubuntu is much faster than Xubuntu. There are now a number (maybe too many?) distros using LXDE - Lubuntu, Peppermint, Salix and also Mint and PCLinuxOs variations.
